At the age of a small girl, Houston began singing professionally with the church choir. Houston sang the backing vocals for Chaka Khosn's song from 1978 Im Every Woman with her mother. She continued to offer the backing vocals of Jermaine Jackson, Lou Rawls and her own mother. She also was briefly models for the front cover of Seventeen magazine in 1981. She started as a featured vocalist for the The New York-based New York Funk band Material. The quality of her vocal performance attracted the attention of the major label Arista who signed her in 1983. Whitney Houston, her debut album, released in 1985 was the highest-selling album for an unproven singer. Singles such as The Greatest Love of All, How Will I Know If You Give Good Love, and the song Saving the Day and All My Love were all released off the album. They helped Houston to achieve 7 US top tens which were higher than even the top tens of The Beatles. The album was sold out of 3 million copies in its first year in the US and went on to sell 25 million worldwide winning it the very first one of six Grammys. The Whitney sequel in 1987, featuring the singles Where Do Broken Hearts GO and I Wanna Dance With Somebody helped to further build upon the success of her first album. But it was, the 1992 movie The Bodyguard that solidified her standing as one of the most loved performers. Although the film and the actor's performance weren't much praised, her soundtrack album that featured her interpretation of Dolly Parton's I Will Always Love You was her top single and album for several months. It sold over 44 million copies worldwide.
